Issue #130 - The June Jollies

. June 2018 .

And a styly hello!
June is done. Pretty short and sweet this month.  Maybe we need to get the camera out a bit more often!
As mentioned last month, we had the Big Game 9 (Cayman v Bermuda).  Michelle played the Gaelic finals. We've been playing in the summer touch league and three of us did the Mile sea swim the other week.

Big Game 9
The Cayman Rugby TV crew were back on the payroll in June.  The main event being Cayman v Bermuda, as part of the Northern Caribbean/America South Champs.  Bermuda were coming to Cayman for this game.
In an effort to look as professional their product, the CRTV Crew splashed out and acquired their corporate "Number Ones" for this one.
Warming up before the game
Signing autographs - the CRTV Crew were quite deservedly the centrefold for this year's programme

Those that were off island were able to watch the game live, with expert commentary from Cayman Rugby TV.
On a warm, but showery Saturday afternoon, the game got under way.  Cayman looked to have the early dominance and were about 10 points clear at half-time.  The crowd was expecting more of the same in the second half.  Bermuda got themselves back into the game and it was neck and neck for the last 20 minutes.  Bermuda edged ahead with about 5 minutes to go.  Cayman were getting desperate and upset was on the cards.  Cayman rallied and had a crack at the Bermuda line and were rewarded with an almost full-time penalty.  Cayman scraped home 20 - 19.  A relieved but happy home crowd!
Bar profits would be up.
The guy in the middle is Billy.  He's an Irish guy who lives in Nassau (Bahamas), but keeps popping up around the place.  Dave knows him from the Freeport trips and also randomly bumped into him at the NZ Maori v USA Eagles game in Chicago a while back.  Then he surfaces for this game.

Gaelic Finals Day
"OK, who wants a cider?"
Michelle's team were playing in the Gaelic Finals Day which is the play offs after the end of the League. Sometimes a different team from the League winners takes out Finals Day but for the Women's league this had not happened for the last 3 years. Michelle's team came 2nd in the League which came down to points difference so they were determined to have a win on Finals Day.
They played the League's 3rd team for the first game which was straight drop out - they had to win to get into the finals. It was a tough game but they managed a good win, and then had to rest up for final in a couple of hours.

The final started off well with a good goal but it didn't continue and they were chasing the top team rest of the game - they had a good game and certainly put the other team under pressure.  However, it wasn't to be and they came away with the Runner-Up medal for 2018.

Open Water Swimming
Meanwhile, across town and closer to the sea, the annual 1 mile sea swim was getting ready to start.  Sam, Jake and Dave would be taking part as Michelle was at the Gaelic finals day.
The morning before was the UANA Mixed Open Water Relay, where a bunch of teams from US, Cayman, Columbia and Uraguay were competing.  Sam and Jake would be swimming in a 'Select' team, since they aren't Caymanian.  It was a 2.5km race, with 2 men and 2 women, each swimming about 650m each.
Jake looking composed before the event

The Cayman girls look happy enough!

Not sure that Jake's hat would be all that effective in the water
Start/Finish
There were 6 Open teams, of which only 2 were Official teams and could actually medal, and 2 Masters teams (neither of which were Official as they were not all Caymanian swimmers and not mixed). Sam and Jake's unofficial team came 4th overall behind Cayman's Official team. They enjoy the relay events and the conditions were perfect!

Talking Tactics
All set!

 One Mile Sea Swim
Usually about 1000 compete in the one mile swim.  It's more of a social swim but there are a bunch of professionals and Olympians and Ex Olympians that take part.  It's also one of the richest swims in the world with prizes totalling over $100,000!
The Start!
Sam, Jake and Dave are out there somewhere - Dave is probably to your right, with the other two on the left somewhere much closer to the front.
Jake and Sam swam the mile really well, with Jake coming in about 26th in 21 Mins & 22 Seconds.
Sam came in at 52nd over all in 23:24 and Dave about 539th in 46:05 Minutes (2 laps?).

At the end of the race they have a stack of random prizes ranging from Smart phones, to hotel stays to air travel (Rome, Ireland, London and a few other spots). We didn't win any of the prizes this year.  Maybe Michelle needs to be there. She usually wins a trip or something.
Dave swam reasonably straight as well!
Not sure that the distance is all that accurate....

Done!  A Beer-garita always goes down well after this race!
Randoms
A nice sunset viewed from our front door

A little Tortoise that we found out in the car park.
We moved him off the road and put him under a hedge near a puddle.

Everyone loves a beach day!

Steely sunset

Father's day brunch - they do it in June here.

Dave bent his pinky at Touch last week.  Will be back in action this week!

Same sunset, different beach

Another small gathering at Governor's Beach on a Holiday Monday

Some of the girly crew
Well, that's it for June.  Reasonably quiet month, but quiet months can be nice too!

The Kids have just left for Denver (Colorado). Their swim Team has gone up there for about two weeks for some altitude training, a swim meet and a few fun activities.  We'll look forward to their report at the end of the month!

Michelle and Dave have some Touch...probably a beach visit or two.  Not sure what else!  Maybe July will be even quieter!  The weather is starting to cook so maybe we'll just lay low for a bit!

See ya Next Time!
