. July 2017 .
Hi there,
As we hinted last month, July would be relatively quiet for us. The kids are off school for the summer, but are still training at the pool twice a day. Jake had a swim meet in Tampa last week and there was a swim meet this weekend here at the Lions pool. Sam heads off next week for her final meet of the season in St Pete's near Tampa.
Otherwise, we've been playing a bit of touch, checking the beach out or getting up at stupid o'clock to watch Rugby!
We promise that August will be a little more action packed.
Beach Time
Summer is definitely here, which means hot, humid days and the occasional downpour. Our days at the beach are often spent standing chest deep in the water all afternoon holding your beer above water level.
The Navy comes to town - there is usually a ship floating about the Caribbean during Hurricane season.
They also spend some time chasing down drug boats.

A blistering hot day at the beach |
Probably just chatting |
Some people use Stand Up Paddle Boards for exercise...
But we all know they were designed to be used as floating bar leaners.

A nice sunset at the beach |
This is about as close to the 'Green Flash' as you are going to get. |
Swimming
Jake and a bunch of other swimmers from the other clubs on island headed up to Tampa last weekend to take part in a big meet there. They went as an 'unofficial' Cayman Team.

One of Jake's heats where there wasn't too much opposition! |
The meet was run a little different to most meets. In the morning sessions (heats) they swam in a 50 metre pool and had metres events (e.g. 50m, 100m etc). In the evenings (finals) they swam in a 'yards' pool and the events were in imperial yards. It isn't often that the kids get to do this - our kids hardly ever get to swim yards, but it is popular in the US where they swim half the year in long course metres and the other half in short course yards. They also ran the morning meets as mixed events, so there were girls and boys (of all ages) racing at the same time. In one race Jake was racing against a 27 year old (one of the coaches)!

They had a couple of delays because of thunder storms |

Ready to go! |
Jake had a pretty good meet, finishing in first in all of his events, and almost all PBs. Jake hadn't raced in short course yards before and he loved it!

The team! |
The following weekend some of the swimmers from the Club Jake was swimming at in Tampa came down for a return meet. This would be Jake's last meet for the season. Sam was only entered in one race as her and the other swimmers heading away this weekend are on a taper and were told to rest up before the big meet.
Hanging out between swims |
Jake did plenty of swimming this weekend - with PBs in all of his events which is pretty impressive, and also a reflection on the increased workload in the pool over the last six months or so. |
Sam hits the water in her sole event of the meet |
Still going strong! |
Touch
Summer Touch continues with Michelle, Jake and Dave playing on different teams. Jake's team had their first loss a few weeks back but are still equal top of their League.
Dave's team is (surprisingly) sitting in fourth spot in the same league as Michelle, whose team sits in Sixth, but with a game in hand.
Jake in action for the U14's |
This weekend, we had the Beach Rugby gear come to town. A Beach Touch Tournament was held before the Beach Rugby. Dave went along and played for the Heineken team.

It was pretty tough going in the soft sand, but they came away with a win and a loss. The play off was canceled due to time constraints...and the fact that a couple of cold beers in the shade sounded way more appealing in that heat!
We get some rain during the tournament, but given the heat, it was a good thing! |
The sun sets on the tournament |
So, that's pretty much it for July!
Short 'n sweet!
August brings a bit more excitement. Sam heads off to St Petes this weekend for her big meet of the season. Then, she is back for about 16 hours before we all head off for a bit of a holiday. Off to check out the Pope's place for a few days before popping over to Geneva for a week. We'll let you know how that goes!
