Issue #107 - Massive Mid Year Missive

. June 2016 .
Falling!
Hey there,
Welcome to the recap of June here in Cayman.
There weather is fairly erratic at the moment. Very hot. Very wet. Occasional storms...and a bit of sun as well.  As we speak, there is a Tropical Storm heading our way. It's just been to the BVI and now near Honduras and Jamaica somewhere. We expect a bit of weather around midnight...
Anyway, what we thought was going to be a quiet month ended up to be pretty busy!
We got a few dives in. Did a couple of beach days. Went flying... with a parachute. We even had a visitor.
Anyway, scroll down, read on...
Diving
Dave was first out with the diving this month. He went out with a mate early one Sunday morning.

Saying Hi to the Guardian of the Sea....
The following weekend, we all headed out to Lighthouse point for a dive.
Another good dive spot with plenty to see.
Flamingo Tongues

Shrimp

A big fat Moray...

Spotted Moray

Lemon Ray

And then the weekend just gone Michelle, Dave, Jake and a couple of friends popped down to a spot we hadn't dived before. After an arduous three minute drive, we were there. It took longer to get the gear out of the car than it did to drive there!
A Shark was about the first thing we saw...or did it see us, 'cos he came back a couple of times.

This where the fuel tankers pump the fuel to the island. No leaks!

Drum...they don't stay still at all!

Christmas Tree Worm

Pesky Lionfish

And we finish the day with a quiet afternoon at Governor's
Para Sailing
Someone from Michelle's work had organised an afternoon of para sailing one Sunday afternoon.
So, since we hadn't done it (except Sam - she had), we thought we'd give it a go.
No sooner had we stepped foot on the beach we were in the boat and off! No messing about here!

Strapped in, hooked on...and off we go...into the wild blue yonder.

On the way up!
It was quite breezy so we got a few bumps and a bit of a swing at times.  The view was quite good.  We could see across the island - which isn't saying that much really...with the islands highest point being about 40 feet! Michelle and Jake were a bit freaked out at the top, in the breeze, and were pretty glad when they started coming down. Jake slipped forward in his seat so found it rather uncomfortable for much of the ride!

Getting higher!

Great view across the island. We are now higher than anything on the island.

Getting a bit worried

Jake wasn't keen on this view

About to be dunked!
As we got winched back in, the boat slowed occasionally to drop us in the water, which was fun!
Sarah, Sam & Ali about to take off next.
Sam and her two swim mates went up next.  They seemed to be taking longer than us.
We were back on the beach at this point, and we learned later that the winch broke while hauling them back in... So they were stuck in the sky!
Eventually they were dropped into the sea and picked up by the boat.  The winch was wrecked. It was a shame really, as there were a few of our friends due to go up next.    Maybe another time!

We get the occasional Flamingo in Cayman.

Beer-gerita...  The perfect drink on a hot day.

They are popular!

Mudslides seem to be going down OK as well!

Michelle commandeers a jet Ski
Apparently she's a fast driver! The kids had a blast

Randoms

Heath pops in for a quiet one
Our Kiwi mate Heath (who we met in BVI but now lives in South Africa) was passing through on business the other week.  He took the time to come and say Gidday and enjoy a couple of quiet ones at our local.

Spontaneous BBQ around a friend's place after touch one day
4th of July swim training...and then Chilli Cook-off, with Coach determined to win this year...he drew for first place!
(although apparently a late vote - before the 10 pm cut-off ...from Dave, secured the win)

Another Sunday at Gov's Beach

Crack! goes the Lightning, just above the house.
The stormy season is upon us!
Swim Meet
So, you thought you'd got away without the mention of a swim meet.  No such luck!
Jake just returned today from the MIT meet in Boston.
This was a club meet (as opposed to the National Team) and it was aimed mainly for the up-and-coming junior swimmers.
Sam heads off tomorrow for St Pete's (near Tampa) where there is a meet for the Senior swimmers of the club that made qualifying times.

All checked in and ready to go!
Jake had a pretty good meet all up. His first session, although no PBs was his introduction to the meet.  After that, he was all over it, with PB's in almost every swim apart from the 200 Back (where he was DQ'd for swimming too far under water at the start). It was a good time too. Shame it doesn't count.
So Jake came back happy with drops in most events in what was the last meet for the season. They get a few weeks off now.
The MIT pool in Boston - with Cayman flag showing on the screen. They even played the Cayman song!

So, that's about it for July.
In August -
  • Sam goes to a swim meet in Tampa
  • Michelle follows
  • Jake and Dave head to Vancouver
  • Michelle and Sam follow
  • We check out life on the high seas...
Until then...

See ya!  .
