. July/August 2013 .
Well, we seem to have made a faux pas of monstrous proportions. We can't find the Blog for July! Did anyone receive it? We are sure we posted it but mysteriously we can't find it, or any email associated with it.
So, what we are going to do is do a combined July/August summary. That will be closely followed by our Alaska Special.
So, without blithering any longer, here is our account of the Summer Holidays in this part of the world.
Surfing
The kids have taken up surfing again. The surf here is pretty lame at the best of times but there is often just enough for the kids to have some fun. The surf beach is about a 3 - 4 minute drive from here so it's nice and easy. There's a few families with kids around the same age who do the same thing and it's nice to go down on a sunday morning or a Friday after work and watch the kids, and maybe have a sneaky beer.
Jake has been doing alright out there |
St Pete's
At the end of the school year, Sam and the other members of the senior swim squad headed up to St Petersburg in Forida for a swim meet at Sarasota and then a swim training camp for a week before another meet in St Pete's.
Sam did some good times in the first meet and then they enjoyed a week of training and having fun without too many parents being around.
The majority of the parents (us included) came up the following weekend. The team Chaperones and Coach were looking a bit ragged by this stage. I guess looking after a bunch of 12 - 17 year olds has its challenges!
The younger swimmers joined the squad for St Pete's. |
I don't know either... |
Some pre-race advice from Big Sis. |
We arrived on the Friday and duly delivered Jake to his team. Although he did stay in our room for the weekend, unlike his sister who was having too much fun with her team mates.
Happy with her swim |
The deadly duo - Sam 'n Ella |
The Friday Session at St Pete's was nearly a wash out. But the rain cleared and the lightning stopped so they managed to get all events through.
Team T-Shirt |
Dave managed to do a little bit of sight-seeing while we were there.
Some of the locals |
Another storm coming! |
Mum is happy with tht one... I think! |
Jake did pretty well. A bit more time in a 50m pool would make a world of difference. |
Gaelic Dinner
In July the Gaelic season ended. Dave's team got cleaned up on finals day after a fairly average season all around. Michelle's team won the league, but got pipped in the finals.
The Dinner and Prizegiving was held at the new George Town Yacht Club. As expected, half of Ireland was there.
Michelle and some of her team mates look a bit more dolled up than usual! |
Dave played for the Reds - if you are wondering about the tie. |
As we said, Michelle's team won the trophy for being the league winners, and also got a medal for that.
In addition Michelle was given a special award for her actions at the pitch on St Paddies Day.
Let's just say that the award was "The Baywatch Award" and you can let your imagination wander.
Interesting collection of goods there! |
Boat Trip
The women's rugby team hosted a team from Dallas. They cleaned them up on the field and then on the Sunday, took them all out on a boat for the afternoon. There was a big crowd, with music and liquid refreshments for all. A good day was had!
A visit to Stingray City is always a must! (Editor's note: The guy in the blue hat is not Dave). |
Touch
There was a charity touch tournament recently. Dave wasn't in a team but soon ended up on one as he arrived. Michelle was on one but took a while to surface that morning.
A couple of kids games were also arranged and both Sam and Jake took part.
Sam, chasing the boys... |
Jake looks for the gap Click here for more July Pics Sam's Amazing Summer While we slaved away back here in Cayman, Sam jetted away to Canada for almost a month of her holidays. Her friend Skyler, who used to live here now lives in Vancouver. Sam traveled up with Skyler's Dad (Russ) who was down on business. She spent a few days in Vancouver with her 'adopted family' and then they went to Seattle for a few days and took in a Baseball game, did some shopping and also went mountain bike riding. Then it was back to Vancouver to prepare for Summer Camp. Sam and Skyler were booked into a weeklong Summer Camp on Vancouver island, which by all accounts was a lot of fun. |
Thinking of George Town.... |
They also spent some time up in Whistler hiking some of the trails up there.
The Water park visit was a hit! |
Sam and the new family... |
We have a photo of Dave in front of this in February this year, only he his on skis. (See below). |

But her holiday wasn't quite over yet. You'll have to read the next issue to find out about that. Don't worry - it'll be out in a few days!

Diving
Jake's big news of the summer was that he got to complete is PADI Junior Open Water Course. He is now a qualified Open Water Diver - and proud of it! When he finished the course he didn't stop grinning for three days. We had to get him to suck on a lemon just to take the smile of his face.
We took him out the following weekend for a dive at Sunset House. It was a pretty good dive too with a few special critters lurking about.
This guy was looking pretty menacing. |
The Mermaid is always popular |

Still Grinning. Where's that lemon? |

Nice pic of a Flamingo Tongue (Editor's note: Yes, Michelle did take this one). |
OK, so that was pretty quick account of July and August.
In our next edition - which is currently at the editor's desk, will be out shortly. It's a summary of our absolutely awesome trip to Alaska and a week on a Cruise Ship us there.
Brace yourself for a stack of photos as 'Mark The Naturist' talks us through some of the highlights of Alaska.
